Senior Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, Senate Armed Services Committee member, has warned President Donald Trump, Sunday, against pulling U.S. troops from Syria. He believes the move “is a disaster in the making”. He also said “There are over 3,000 ISIS fighters still roaming around Syria,” and “If we withdrew our troops anytime soon, ISIS would come back, the war between Turkey and the Kurds would get out of hand, and you’d be giving Damascus to the Iranians without an American presence.”
There are around 2000 U.S. troops deployed in Syria at this moment. Mr. Graham believes that pulling the troops out would lead to a resurgence of the Islamic State and will also increase its sway over the Syrian government in Damascus. The President’s advisers also believe that the military, in small numbers, needs to stay in Syria for at least another 2 years. However, the President is not in favor of the advice but it has not been determined if he would withdraw the troops.
Trump decided for the early withdrawal of U.S. troops because the Islamic State has lost almost all the territory it held in Syria. Most are against this decision and it has also put the President at odds with the officials of the U.S. military. The officials do not believe the fight against the Islamic State is complete and as such, are against pulling back the troops this early.
The National Security Council of the White House is to meet and discuss the campaign led by U.S. against the Islamic State in Syria.
